Opal has been a popular gem for many centuries and has a very interesting structure. The name opal comes from the Sanskrit name for precious stone upala. Opal structure is not crystalline and considered a mineraloid. The chemistry of Opal is primarily SiO2 and varying amounts of water. The amount of water varies from 5 -10% and greater. This water can help geologists determine the temperature of the host rock at the time the opal formed.

BOULDER OPAL SLAB
A rare rough Queensland Boulder Opal Slab. You never get unworked pieces like this for sale, so this really is a gem in the rough. Features ethereal streaks of green, purple, blue and pink on a white background, wrapped in its sandstone host rock. Two photos are taken against the sun to show transparency. Being unpolished it was dang near impossible to photograph the colour streaks in this piece, in any light. I’ve done my best but it does look so much better in person. Polished up of course it will look absolutely stunning. A great project for the lapidary or opal enthusiast or jeweller. A super piece!

SiO2 · nH2O.A colourless variety of Opal. Hyalite is opal, an amorphous silica glass containing about 3-8% water. Hyalite occurs as globular and botryoidal masses and irregular crusts. Found in volcanic and pegmatite environments where the silica deposits from the gas phase. It often shows a strong green fluorescence in UV light.

Check out this outstanding Top Boulder Opal Rough Parcel. An extra quality parcel of beautiful rough Boulder Opal. These are the best specimens out of several lots bought in person directly from the dude that mined it! Unusual and vibrant aqua colouring is a feature of this lot, along with blue, green sparkles and other flashes of colour. Some pieces show the veining which is an attractive feature also. Each piece has been cut to its best potential ready for jewellery or perfect as a mineral specimen in your Aussie collection. I feel like this one is a parcel I’ll regret selling, but that’s the way it goes in the rock trade. I love opal in the rough and this is a special little parcel on offer. Most photos taken wet, none do justice to this lot, which looks better in person. Boulder Opal is found only in Australia, making it rare gem indeed. Enjoy!
